Once upon a time, the idea of a Jesuit university in Eastern Africa seemed like a daydream, some would even say just fantasy. How times have changed! With every passing day over the last 6 years that dream is gradually evolving into reality – thanks to the intensely creative work of the core planning team and all our partners and collaborators! We now have a solid business plan backed by a formidable financial plan.

As I come to the end of my term as provincial, I have a deep sense of gratitude for the generosity and contribution of so many people during this time of planning and preparation for the launch of JUEA. In some sense, I feel like a Moses – I can see the promised land of JUEA in the horizon.

Yet, considering the progress that we have made, I feel more like a Joshua, joining ranks with the companions of Eastern Africa Province and all our partners and collaborators, and marching onto the plains of Eastern Africa to hoist the banner of the first-ever Jesuit university in Africa and Madagascar. God willing, JUEA will be the best in Africa, the best for Africa in the 21st century.

I feel privileged to continue being part of the core planning team. As I look forward to the launch of JUEA, the words of St. Edmund Campion come to mind, “The expense is reckoned, the enterprise is begun; it is of God; it cannot be withstood.”
